Completion of Lambeth Lighting Project Marks Start of Brighter Future

A major £17.2 million project to replace thousands of street lights across Lambeth has been completed.

The PFI scheme has seen most of the borough’s street lights replaced or upgraded, helping to create brighter and safer streets and parks across Lambeth.

Since 2006, over 9,300 new columns have been installed in over 880 roads, 7,900 redundant columns have been removed and recycled, over 2,000 signs, beacons and bollards have been replaced and 10 parks have had their lighting upgraded.

As well as improving the visual appearance of streets by introducing new, attractive street lighting columns, the replacement scheme has led to greater reliability, with the number of faults reported cut by around half since 2006.

The completion of the project will be marked by a ceremonial ’switching on’ of the last new street light to be replaced in Bellefields Road in Brixton by Cllr Sally Prentice, Cabinet member for Environment on Lambeth Council, on Thursday 10th September.

The works have been carried out by Lambeth Lighting Services (LLS) - a consortium of David Webster Limited (DW) and IIC (Investors in the Community).  Over the past 4 years the partnership has replaced the majority of the borough’s street lights, which now all meet the latest British and European Standards.

Cllr Prentice said: “Good street lighting is essential in helping reduce crime and helping to make people feel safer, as well as helping to reduce road accidents. This investment will benefit residents in Lambeth for years to come.

Our street lighting project is just one of a range of ways we are helping make Lambeth cleaner, safer and greener. The Better Neighbourhoods project is seeing dozens of roads and pavements resurfaced, hundreds of new street trees planted, and tired and outdated street signs and furniture replaced. Lambeth streets are also cleaner than at any time in the last six years according to the latest figures, and we are improving services and facilities to boost recycling levels.

Jean-Marie Le Herissier, Managing Director of DW said, “We are delighted that we have achieved this installation completion milestone and look forward to continuing to work with Lambeth Council for the duration of the maintenance phase of this PFI project.

DW is the service provider of Lambeth Lighting Services and will continue to maintain the lighting across the borough.
