Bright Milestone Reached in Street Lights Upgrade

REDCAR and Cleveland Council's street lighting improvement programme reaches a major milestone on Tuesday, July 1 - when the 2,000th street light is replaced.

The Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Transportation and Planning Councillor Mary Lanigan was given the honour of switching the power on for the column in Hollywalk Close, Normanby Ward.

The Council has a partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Lighting Services Limited, a consortium of David Webster Limited, a lighting services provider based in Harlow, and Investors in the Community, to make their streets brighter and safer by installing over 15,000 street lights across the Borough by 2010.

Councillor Lanigan said: "It's a great milestone to reach so early in the project. We're very pleased with the progress, which is ahead of programme. We've received extremely positive compliments from the residents of Redcar and Cleveland who are appreciating the benefits that have been offered by the street lighting improvements."

Bertrand Richard, Managing Director of David Webster Limited, said: “We are delighted to have exceeded another important milestone of a key project and look forward to continuing to work in a spirit of partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to the benefits of the Borough and all its residents.”

The project involves replacing more than 85% of the existing stock with modern, high quality lights, ensuring they all meet the British and European Standards over the next three years.

Illuminated signs and bollards are also being replaced as part of the scheme and the festive lighting which will be installed across the Borough, too.
