Specification
The installation of a next generation communications network along 17km of the north and southbound carriageway between Junctions 6a–10 of the M1 motorway. This includes installation of fibre optic networks, gantry fit-out works, new generation above ground joints, and the introduction of Marechal connections for all gantry cabling works.
The contract includes also variable message sign (VMS) bases and advanced motorway indicators (AMI). The bases for the new type 354 emergency roadside telephones will also be installed. We have also been requested to design special cabinets which can house all the gantries electronic equipment at ground level.
As a value management concept, the gantries will be fitted out on the ground prior to erecting on prepared bases again to an approved Highways Agency design.
Commissioning works for the additional signal transponder, telephone and Midas responder works are now required.
All the works for this project will be managed on location from the large site compound which has been specifically set up to run a contract of this size to completion.
The DW solution
The site compound, housing all the trades working on this scheme is found
adjacent to the M1 motorway itself off Junction 8, next to the infamous Buncefield
Oil Terminal.

As a value management concept, the gantries will be fitted out on the ground prior
to erecting and special ground level cabinets will be fitted for installation of
electronic equipment.

In order to manage the complexity and size of this contract the DW Projects
compound has adequate capacity to house site offices and material storage.
The offices comprise of 5 units on 2 stories and 5 containers to hold goods along
with a large outside storage area for all other major items.

New generation above ground joints and Marechal connections are to be used
through the contract.
